Format

Replaces the speakers with the chosen format around the main seat, aimed at it, and checks them against that format. Dolby Atmos: surrounds at 100–110°, tops at 45° (front) and 135° (rear) seen from the side, top middle 80° (90° in 7.1.6), in line with the front speakers. Auro-3D: heights above their bed speakers at 30°. DTS:X publishes no fixed angles, so it uses the Dolby positions. Subwoofers follow CEDIA/CTA-RP22: one at the front-wall midpoint or a side-wall quarter point, two at opposite wall midpoints. First-reflection points are marked on the side walls (toggle with ⌁).

About this home cinema planner

The Design Studio is a free 3D planner for home cinemas and home theaters. Set the size of your room, place the screen, seating and speakers, and it checks the layout as you go. It runs in your browser: there is nothing to install, and you do not need an account to use it.

Speaker layouts from 3.1 and 5.1 to Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 and 7.1.6, DTS:X and Auro-3D, with every speaker angle checked against the Dolby and Auro-3D setup guidelines. Arrange speakers places and aims them for you.

Screen and seating: viewing distance and angle for your screen size, the sight-line over a second row and the projector throw.

Room acoustics: an estimate of the reverberation time (RT60) against the 0.2 to 0.5 s that CEDIA/CTA-RP22 recommends, the room’s bass resonances and where acoustic panels help.

From plan to measurement: a printable placement sheet, a measurement plan for Room EQ Wizard (REW), and the REW Analyzer to read the results.

Is the planner free?

Yes. Designing, checking and sharing a room are free. With a free account you can also save one room and keep up to 20 REW measurements with it.

Which speaker layouts can I plan?

3.1, 5.1 and 7.1; Dolby Atmos 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.4, 7.2.4 and 7.1.6; DTS:X 5.1.4 and 7.1.4; and Auro-3D 9.1, 10.1, 11.1 and 13.1.

Does it work for a small room or a living room?

Yes. Rooms can be 2.5 to 12 m wide and long and 2 to 5 m high (about 8 to 39 ft by 6.5 to 16 ft), furnished with sofas, a TV and console, windows and rugs as well as cinema seating.

Can I share my design?

Yes. Share makes a link that opens the same room for anyone, without an account.
